2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember and universally recognizable number that makes a critical connection between individuals and families in need and the appropriate community-based organizations and government agencies. 2-1-1 makes it possible for people to navigate the complex maze of human services’ agencies and programs. By making services easier to access, 2-1-1 encourages prevention and fosters self-sufficiency. Callers can access the service by dialing 2-1-1. Trained Information and Referral Service Specialists (certified by the Alliance of Information & Referral Systems) assess callers’ needs and determine which service providers are best equipped to handle callers’ problems. Bilingual staff assist non-English speaking callers. 2-1-1 Helpline maintains a comprehensive database of social service resources, including federal, state, and local government agencies, community-based organizations, and private social service agencies. Information and Referral Service Specialists use this database to determine a caller’s eligibility for social programs and services. Tulsa's 2-1-1 (Oklahoma's first) was launched on July 11, 2005. It is an expansion of the Tulsa Helpline program which has served the Tulsa area for over 20 years. Tulsa's 2-2-2 service is funded by the Chapman Trusts, the Tulsa Area United Way, a grant from the city of Tulsa, and state and federal funds through the Oklahoma Department of Health.
