The 2003 Community Service Council Awards
At the Annual Meeting of the CSC Board, on December 4, 2003
at the CSC office,
special recognitions were made by Teresa Burkett, President, and Phil
Dessauer, Jr., Executive Director. The awards celebrated people who
helped CSC meet the unusual challenges of 2003, and those who "stayed the course"
focusing on CSC's ongoing commitments through leadership and service.

"Meeting the 2003 Challenges ..."
Alice Blue
and
Dolores Verbonitz
with CSC's Area Prevention Resource Center (APRC), were honored for "stomping
the capitol halls for money for the East Tulsa Prevention Coalition."
Coalition leader Charlie Jackson, Tulsa Police Department, accepted the award
on their behalf.

Sherry Thurman,
coordinator of CSC's Tulsa Weather Coalition (which saves lives by lending air
conditioners to Tulsans with serious health conditions), received a "Keeping
Tulsa Cool" Award. It was presented by Jim Lyall, CSC Associate
Director, and Barbara Barrett, a program participant. (Sherry Thurman is
pictured on the right in the bottom left photo below.)

Kerry Lewis
(not pictured), CSC Board member and
chair of the Oklahoma Budget Solutions Group, was honored with a "Sherlock
Holmes" Award for his leadership in understanding and working with state
budget changes during this challenging year.

Wayne Bland,
CSC Board member and Trustee for the Temple Foundation, received an award for
helping secure funds to continue and strengthen CSC's Read Now child literacy
program.

"Staying the Course ..."
Barb Hose
received an "Assuring Quality Child
Care" Award from Liz Reece, Director of CSC's Child Care Resource Center.
Ms. Hose was the original child care home provider for the Child Care Food
Program and has long been a leader for high quality in family child care; her
program has earned national accreditation and she helped found Tulsa's Family
Child Care Home Association. Pictured below: Liz Reece, Beth
Sullins, Barb Hose.

Jane France,
coordinator of CSC's Tulsa Alliance for Families, received a "Silver Whistle /
Burning the Midnight Oil" Award for her hard work and successes in 2003 in
fundraising and program development and coordination. Her award, a
silver whistle (useful in the current youth basketball project!), was
presented by CSC senior planner Jan Figart (right).

Janet McKenzie
was honored with the "Our Favorite Kindergarten Teacher Video Star" Award for
her work for early childhood community partnerships at the local and state
levels. Steve Kennedy,
CSC Board member and chair of the JumpStart early childhood community
engagement campaign, presented the award -- and was then surprised when Janet
in turn presented him with the first annual "JumpStart for Early Childhood
Success" Award.

"Staying A Long Time ..."
Mary Finley,
director of CSC's Tulsa Volunteer Center, was honored for twenty years of
service to CSC and the Tulsa community.
Dan Arthrell,
CSC's Director of Public Policy, and Sharon
Clark, CSC's Communications /
Website Coordinator, were each honored for twenty-five years of service to CSC
and the Tulsa community.
