Census Information Center
of Eastern Oklahoma

Established in October 2006 as a program of
the Community Service Council and the U.S. Census Bureau

The Census Information Center (CIC) Program is a cooperative program between the U.S. Census Bureau and 47 national, regional, and local non-profit organizations.  Started in 1988, CIC represents the interests of underserved communities.  The centers serve as repositories of census data and reports, making census information and data available to the public and the communities they serve.  The CICs use census data in areas such as program planning, advocacy, needs assessment, defining service areas, public policy development, developing new business enterprises, and conducting race/ethnic-related research.  (Census Information Centers website, 12/06 ... read more

Using Tulsa's Census Information Center

The CIC frequently publishes data reports online.  Visit this web page often for the latest information.

In addition to the materials on the website, hard copy information is available from the Community Service Council, during their regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. except holidays.  Extensive copies may require a small copy fee of 7 cents per page.

For special data requests, please contact Jan Figart, jfigart@csctulsa.org.  Please place the words Census Information Center in the “subject” line of the email.  Special requests may require additional time.  Extensive searches or analysis of data for presentations or grants may require an additional fee.

Using Census Information

CIC provides consultation and training so that people can utilize U.S. census data more effectively.

Getting the Most from US Census Data - compares and gives step by step instructions on accessing Decennial Census data, Population Estimates data, and American Community Survey data.  (Prepared by Melanie Poulter, CIC/CSC, revised May 2007.)

Census changes and economic conditions featured at 2009 conference of the National Association of Planning Councils
The Community Service Council is a member of the National Association of Planning Councils, and CSC Executive Director Phil Dessauer and CIC Director Jan Figart participated in NAPC's annual conference in Austin March 2-4.  The opening panel at City Hall described coming Census changes and implications for local communities.  Dessauer and Figart led a session on The Perfect Storm.  Labor economist Heidi Shierholz, Ph.D., from the Economic Policy Institute in Washington, D.C., discussed the current economic crisis and ways forward.  More about the conference, and downloadable presentations:  http://www.communityplanning.org/2009%20NAPC%20Conference.htm  Also, Jan Figart was honored with the 2009 Judith Rothbaum Award for excellence in using social indicators for community action.

Data Compilations for Tulsa and the Surrounding Areas

The Community Service Council and Metropolitan Human Services Commission prepare a Community Profile indicators report each year, to provide a "snapshot" of conditions, trends, and needs affecting people in the greater Tulsa area.  The report is widely used by Tulsa Area United Way, other funders, human services planners, service providers, and other interested groups and individuals.
