All best wishes to Laura Dempsey-Polan, Ph.D. ... who left the Community Service Council at the end of August, 2003, after contributing nearly thirteen years of service and leadership on behalf of persons with disabilities.  She will continue to participate in some Alliance activities.  She is now director of a health care organization.

Dr. Mel Levine came to Tulsa on September 28th, 2002 to speak to Tulsa Public School's 2nd Parent Conference.  (The Tulsa Area Alliance on Disabilities is a partner in this conference.)

Dr. Levine is a nationally recognized neurologist, helping educators work with every child, no matter how they learn, no matter if they have already been labled with a disability. For the Schools Attuned program, every child can learn and contribute.  Dr. Levine's book, All Kinds Of Minds, is currently on the NY Best seller list.  His program is called the "Schools Attuned Program."

Today, with substantial funding through the State Department of Education, Oklahoma is working with Dr. Levine's institute, All Kinds of Minds and the Institute's Schools Attuned Program.  This Schools Attuned training offers intensive instruction free to any school who sends a volunteer team of teachers who enter the program with substantial commitment to implement this method of teaching.  A school must ask for the training and the Oklahoma Director for All Kinds of Minds is Velta Johnston--If you want your school to adopt this method and send teachers to bring this method back to their school to train faculty and work with regular and special educators--call Velta Johnston--405-216-0660 or email her at vjohnston@allkindsofminds.org.  Velta is working out of Oklahoma City, traveling the state, to sign individual schools for local trainings (minimum 5 day commitment for any team). It is free and addresses teaching all teacher how to work with kids who might otherwise be labled and segregated.

Everyone enjoyed a celebration at 6th and Peoria in Tulsa on Saturday, April 21, 2001 -- to release the findings from the HUD community profile on diversity/disability and fair housing.

The Mayor proclaimed it Fair Housing Month, and the Fair Housing Partnership signed a memorandum of agreement.  A fun-filled spring festival previewed new urban housing at 6th and Peoria.

An Employer Marketplace Job Fair, sponsored by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation in the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services, took place on May 14, 2001.  Job seekers had an opportunity to interview with 50 employers.  This free event was held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Clarion Meridian Hotel and Convention Center, 737 S. Meridian in Oklahoma City.  The event was open to the public; accommodations such as wheelchair access, braille, large print materials, interpreters for the deaf and other assistance were available for job seekers with disabilites.  For more information, call Debbie Gregg, 405-447-0295.

1/15/03 -- Families, Here is a note from a statewide community provider organization committed to services in the community, ONCOR --

At the Okahoma Network of Comunity Options and Resources (ONCOR) meeting members agreed that Parents, Family Members, Guardians and People with Disabilities are the best advocates when addressing issues for Oklahomans with disabilities with state Senators and Representatives.  (e.g., Child Abuse was not on Oklahoma's legislative radar screen until advocates made it a priority, worked at the Capital in numbers, persistently sent letters and made calls, and with professionals who understand the legislative process, delivered their message.)  For this reason, ONCOR arranged a Capital Commando Training for advocates and family members in Tulsa and Oklahoma City - March 6 & 7, 2003. This training reviewed the legislative process and address edcurrent issues Oklahomans with disabilities are facing, alongside solutions and legislation to advocate for.  For more information:  Lisa Toth-LaTray, Director of Development and Government Relations with Independent Opportunities at lisa@ioi-tulsa.com.
