CSC initiatives and staff frequently receive recognition for their work.  Here are some recent examples...

Jim Lyall Receives Life Saver Award for Disaster Work

CSC Associate Director Jim Lyall was honored with the 2008 “Life Saver Award” from Tulsa Partners Inc. on November 10th.  This award is given to a staff member of an organization for “outstanding work in coordinating community organizations in disaster planning, training and response activities.”  Oklahoma Secretary of State Susan Savage was the event’s keynote speaker.  Pictured:  Steve Penrose, President, Tulsa Partners Board of Directors; Susan Savage; Jim Lyall.

CSC Honored by Boy Scouts of America

Phil Dessauer, CSC Executive Director (second from left), received an award at the Boy Scout Dinner in August 2008.

The Community Service Council has a collaborative partnership with the Boys Scouts of America.  Over the past year CSC and the Boy Scouts have jointly worked with at-risk youth at Gilcrease Middle School in north Tulsa.  CSC has incorporated the Boys Scouts curriculum into its in-school/after school leadership program and jointly facilitated activities.  CSC's Prevention Resource Center has also acted as a community conduit facilitating meetings among the Mayor's office, other community agencies, and the Boys Scouts for mutual youth development goals.

2008 "Friends of Children" Honoree:  Phil Dessauer

CSC Executive Director Phil Dessauer was honored with the “Friends of Children” Award by ECAO (Early Childhood Association of Oklahoma), the state affiliate of the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children).  This annual award acknowledges an individual who has made professional contributions to the early childhood community on behalf of young children.

Susan Illgen, Director of Smart Start Oklahoma, nominated Phil and presented the award.  Paige Whalen, with CSC's Child Care Resource Center, accepted it on his behalf on Friday, July 25 at the opening awards ceremony of ECAO’s Annual Early Childhood Conference.  ECAO's mission is to build leadership and support individuals committed to the needs, rights, quality care, education and well being of all young children and their families.

Child Care Resource Center Receives 2008 Nania Award

Recognizing Outstanding Work in Disaster Mitigation and Preparedness

Tulsa Partners, Inc. honored 2008 Nania Award winners at an awards banquet on June 17th at the Bernsen Community Life Center.  “Nania” is a Cherokee word meaning “all together.”  The Nania Awards were established in 2004 to recognize organizations, businesses and individuals who have displayed outstanding leadership in bringing people “all together” at the grassroots level to build disaster-resistant communities.

Corporate honorees included the Child Care Resource Center -- "a key stakeholder in local efforts to care for the needs of children and their caregivers during a disaster. They have worked for a number of years with local emergency management on identifying the location of child care centers as critical facilities to consider in an emergency response.  They have also been active in educating child care facilities on developing emergency plans and business continuity plans, working with other entities to provide needed materials and training."

This year’s individual honoree and keynote speaker was Mark K. Shriver, Vice President and Managing Director of U.S. Programs (USP) for Save the Children.  Other honorees:  The Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) and the City of Tulsa’s Operation Power Up

The banquet was sponsored by Bank of Oklahoma, with additional support from State Farm Insurance.  Tulsa Partners, Inc. is a non-profit organization made up of citizen, business, and agency partners working to reduce risk and assist the community in being prepared for all hazards.  Tulsa Partners, Inc. is working to create a disaster-resistant community through public/private partnerships, citizen education and demonstration projects.  For more information, visit www.tulsapartners.org.

CSC Courts Programs earn local and national recognition-

The 2008 Liberty Bell Award

Rose Ewing, Drug Court/DUI Court Administrator, accepted the 2008 Liberty Bell Award in May during Tulsa County Bar Association Law Week.  “Community Service Council received this award for its commitment to improving the legal system and enhancing courts that ensure freedom for many citizens of Tulsa from the bonds of addiction and mental illness.  The award is given to a person or agency providing outstanding support to the legal community.”  (Commerce and Legal News, May 9, 2008)

The National DWI Court Leadership Award

The Community Service Council congratulates Judge Sarah Day Smith (above, holding award; with colleagues; program administrator Rose Ewing is at left).  Judge Smith received the first annual National DWI Court Leadership Award at the National Drug Court Conference in St. Louis on May 29, 2008.  She was recognized for her exemplary leadership in the field since convening Oklahoma’s first DUI Court in Tulsa in 2001.  She also has headed the Drug Court since 2000.
